Murkowski on Mayorkas trial

Though a vote on the constitutionality of the second impeachment article against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas fell along Senate party lines, Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski was the only senator to break with her party during the proceedings, voting “present” on the constitutionality of the first article. On Thursday, she explained why to POLITICO. “It was very clear that when you’re talking about lying under oath, that rises to a level of high crimes and misdemeanors,” Murkowski said regarding the second article. But “Article One was more nuanced. … It was a constitutional point of order and I felt it needed to be debated.” Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had offered a deal on the floor to allow limited debate and some points of order, but Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) did not allow it through. Murkowski thought the deal would have allowed “a fair amount of process.” Still, Murkowski said she was concerned about the “very scary precedent” set by short circuiting the trial Wednesday, a common GOP refrain afterward.
